Major transport improvements are on the way for Rolleston, and they’re set to make one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing districts even more connected, accessible, and attractive to live in.
The Government has confirmed plans for a $125 million bridge and transport upgrade over State Highway 1 in Rolleston, a project designed to improve traffic flow, increase safety, and support the incredible population growth taking place across Selwyn.
For anyone considering building a new home, relocating to Selwyn, or investing in Canterbury property, this is exciting news.

A Major Investment in Rolleston’s Future
Following public consultation, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has revised its original proposal and is now planning a more direct flyover connection between Rolleston Drive North and Jones Road.
The updated design aims to create smoother traffic movements while reducing congestion for local residents and businesses.
In addition to the new bridge, Waka Kotahi is investigating additional highway access points at the Weedons Interchange to further improve traffic efficiency and ease pressure on the local road network.
According to Transport Minister Chris Bishop, the project will:
“…provide safer, easier and more efficient transport connections for people and businesses in the Selwyn District, the fastest growing district in New Zealand, and an important gateway to Christchurch.”
The bridge forms part of the Government’s Roads of Regional Significance Programme and contributes to the wider $8.7 billion New Zealand Upgrade Programme, demonstrating a long-term commitment to supporting Canterbury’s continued growth.

Why This Matters for Selwyn Residents
If you’ve driven through Rolleston recently, you’ve probably experienced just how quickly the town has grown.
Over the past decade, Rolleston has transformed from a small rural township into one of New Zealand’s most desirable places to live. Thousands of new families have chosen the area thanks to its modern amenities, quality schools, growing employment opportunities and easy commute to Christchurch.
With that rapid growth has inevitably come increased traffic.
Weekend congestion around State Highway 1, busy intersections during peak commuting hours, and delays accessing Rolleston have become common frustrations for many residents.
Projects like this are about planning ahead.
Improved transport infrastructure means:
- Faster and more reliable commuting times
- Improved road safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians
- Better access for local businesses
- Increased connectivity across Selwyn
- Capacity to support future residential growth
For homeowners, these improvements help make everyday life more convenient. For businesses, they create more efficient transport links. For property buyers and investors, they reinforce confidence that Rolleston is continuing to receive significant government investment.

Infrastructure Supports Property Growth
One of the biggest factors influencing long-term property demand is infrastructure.
When governments invest in roads, transport connections and community facilities, they’re investing in the future of the area itself.
Rolleston has already established itself as one of Canterbury’s strongest growth locations, and projects like this further strengthen its appeal.
As transport improves, more people are willing to live a little further from Christchurch while still enjoying an easy commute. That continued demand supports new housing developments and creates opportunities for homeowners and investors alike.
Combined with excellent schools, expanding retail options, recreational facilities and a welcoming community, Rolleston continues to offer outstanding value for those looking to build a new home.
